North American black bears are typically solitary animals. Black bears are known to hibernate during the winter months depending on the availability of food at this time. A scarcity of food can also drive these animals in towns to forge through garbage cans and dumps. In warmer climate places, bears will not hibernate at all.
Bears have short, non-retractable claws that give them excellent tree climbing and forging skills. They will look rather slow when walking because they walk flat on their feet like people. However, they can run up to 30 mph.
