Gharials typically live in groups consisting of one male and several females. This is called a harem. To initially assemble these harems, males will use vocalizations and bubble displays created by the bulbous bump on the end of their snout. After this, they become fiercely territorial especially during mating season.
You can usually find gharials in the water, only coming out to bask in the sun to warm their bodies or to make nests. Because they rarely walk, they are unable to lift themselves on land and have to drag themselves onto the river banks.

The gharial is one of the largest crocodilians but has the narrowest snout of any crocodilian species.
