Recently, our Primates Team worked with two veterinarians from the Bornean Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF). This unique collaboration was intended to trade best practices between BOSF, which rescues, rehabilitates, and releases orangutans in Borneo, and the zoo, which currently cares for 6 Bornean Orangutans. One of our main focuses in working together was nebulizer training.
Just like humans, Orangutans can experience respiratory issues and conditions that are treatable with nebulizing. Unlike humans, orangutans don’t understand that the nebulizer is helpful! At ZooTampa, we have trained our adult male orangutan, Goyang, to participate in his treatments to help improve his Orangutan Respiratory Disease Syndrome (ORDS). Because BOSF rescues so many orangutans, they often come into contact with respiratory issues that can be helped with these treatments. We decided to enlist the help of Topi, a seven-year-old female, to help us teach the BOSF vets how we train the nebulizer behavior from the beginning!
Our training centers around positive reinforcement, rewarding the orangutans for doing the behaviors we’d like to see increase! We teach everything in small steps. We started by having the vets teach Topi to put her lips on the mouthpiece (without stealing it!), hold on for a long time, and then start to take breaths! Topi was an eager student and learned very quickly!!
While the main focus of the visit was to teach the vets how we train our orangutans to take a nebulizer, it was far from the only experience we shared! Drs. Vivi and Muhtadin spent three weeks with us, from the beginning of our day to the end! We introduced them to our monkeys, most of whom are not native to Asia. We swapped ideas about care, diets, and enrichment. Our team relished asking questions about the vets’ experiences in Borneo and hearing the fantastic tales about their rescued orangutans. We spent our lunches together, swapping stories, laughing, and learning about each other. Brought together by a passion for orangutans, our visit started as a collaboration between professionals and ended as a partnership between friends!
