Giant tortoises are typically found in smaller groups and can be found spending a majority of their day grazing or basking in the sun to keep warm. Being “cold-blooded”, they are unable to regulate their body temperatures correctly and must use natural sources such as sunlight, shade, and heat to warm up or keep cool. During the night, they sometimes sleep in shallow waters or mud wallows to keep themselves cool during the day and warm overnight.
Tortoises are notorious for being slow and rarely stand up or walk. When they do however, their feet and front legs are turned inwards, which cause each step to move them side to side rather than a straight line. They use a sliding method to travel around, pushing their body with their back feet.
