Radiated Tortoise

Astrochelys radiata

Radiated Tortoises are diurnal as they prefer warmer temperatures. They drink a lot of water whenever they get the opportunity, though they can go long periods without. During the hot season, they dig a hole in the ground and take refuge as a way to avoid dehydration and the excessive heat. During breeding season, rival males fight and attempt to roll each other onto their backs. They initiate courtship with head-bobbing and smelling the female’s hind legs, which is followed by energetic circling and butting the female’s carapace.

Tortoise and turtle shells have a blood and nerve supply that allows them to feel when they are being touched
Radiated tortoises earn their name for the pattern of yellow lines radiating from the center of each scute
